This hydroelectric power calculator will help you calculate the potential power output from a hydroelectric power system installed on your existing water course. It is designed to be used in conjunction with reading the Introducing Renewable Energy book, and in particular the section on Assessing the Production Capacity of your Watercourse.

How to use this calculator

This calculator assumes that you have already carried out a basic survey of your site and know the head height and have estimated the design flow for your system. Enter this information below. If you know the generator type and efficiency levels, you can enter these in, otherwise leave them at their default values.

Then move the pointer on the map on the right hand side of the screen to provide your location. You can use the [+] and [-] buttons to zoom in and out on the map. You do not have to be particularly accurate - just so long as you have identified your specific region. Once you have done this, click on the CALCULATE button in order to provide basic estimates for performance for your system.
